Your trimmers are self-sharpening. Does that mean I will never need a new blade?
Our trimmers have a metal blade on the base so each time it is used; the cutting blade sharpens itself. As with any fine cutlery, eventually the blade could wear down and need to be replaced. For a longer life, run the blade back and forth several times without paper. This will perform a sharpening action similar to that of a kitchen knife.
How are your paper cutters self-sharpening?
The action is similar to sharpening knives. Dahle rolling trimmers feature two blades, one stationary and one moving. The rotary blade slides across the stationary one at such an angle that it improves the cutting edge. Paper does not have to be present for this action to occur. The grinding together of the two metal surfaces hones the cutting edge.
With such a sharp blade, can I easily hurt myself?
The main advantage to owning a rolling trimmer is that the cutting blade is almost fully enclosed. This virtually eliminates the chance of personal injury.
How long do the cutting blades last?
The life span of a cutting blade varies depending on what you are cutting and how often the trimmer is used. If you trim photo paper occasionally, the blade will have a longer life than if you cut card stock on a daily basis. Are your Personal Trimmers as precise as your Premium Trimmers?
All Dahle products offer precise results. Your precision can be dependent on what you are trying to accomplish and how much you are trying to cut. You should receive the same results on either trimmer when cutting a single sheet of paper. Here are a few things to look for to help guarantee the level of accuracy you need. Size and thickness of the blade, strength and flexibility of the roll bar, and accuracy of the grid and paper guide will all have a combined effect in determining the accuracy of your cut.
Do your trimmers cut in both directions?
Since our trimmers feature a round rotary blade, instead of a unidirectional blade, it will cut in either direction. This can prove to be useful if you are left-handed.
Why do you use a metal base while other manufacturers offer laminated wood?
Metal base trimmers are superior to other forms in that they won’t warp, chip, or crack due to age or climate. The metal base also allows our trimmers to be significantly lighter to comparable wood or laminate based trimmers.
What is an automatic paper clamp?
An automatic paper clamp involuntarily holds your work in place and is a feature on all of our rolling trimmers. This clamp takes the form of a rubber wheel that presses down on the plastic clamp. To release the action of the clamp and remove your material, slide the cutting head to the very end of either side.
Why is sheet capacity listed in a trimmers specifications?
Sheet capacity is a standard specification used to measure the capability of the paper trimmer. While the effectiveness of a trimmer should not be measured in sheet capacity alone, it is a helpful guide to it capability.
What do the imprinted lines and numbers on the base of the cutter represent?
The grids and numbers represent standard cutting sizes. Dahle products are German Engineered, so some of the grids represent European paper sizes.
Can I just buy a new blade or do I have to buy a whole new cutting head?
Due to safety reasons they come fully assembled inside of the cutting head. Our cutting heads are intricately designed with heavy-duty springs and other moveable parts. To help reduce the chance of personal injury, our blades come fully assembled and calibrated.
My rolling trimmer is no longer cutting. Do I need to replace the blade?
There are two things to check before replacing the blade. First, if you use your cutter mainly for photo trimming, there may be an ink build up on the blade. The blade just needs to be carefully cleaned. Second, did you just try to cut something a little too thick? If so, it may have caused the blade to “jump track” and the cutting head needs to be realigned. The following diagram will show you How to Realign the Cutting Head.
My rolling trimmer is squeaking. What can I do?
It could be the cutting head is slightly out of alignment. Pull the cutting head to the middle of the bar and turn it slightly away from the base. Run it back and forth a few times without paper to be sure it is still running smoothly. Also, you can lubricate the blade with graphite spray. Just be sure to wipe it clean before using the trimmer again.
My new rolling trimmer arrived and the blade is up on the plastic clamp. Does it need to be returned?
From the vibrations and jostling in shipping, the cutting head may have “jumped track.” The cutting head needs to be realigned. The following diagram will show you How to Realign the Cutting Head.
Are your cutting blades replaceable?
The cutting blades are replaceable but due to safety reasons they come fully assembled inside of the cutting head. How do you change the cutting head?
Cutting heads can be fairly simple to replace. To guarantee optimal accuracy, please refer to your users manual for complete instructions.
My rolling trimmer is not cutting square. How can I adjust it?
Before you take apart your cutter, make sure to check the printing alignment of your printer. Due to the feeding mechanism, a printer will often print at a slight angle. The best way to verify that your trimmer is out of square is to check it with a steel square. If indeed your trimmer needs to be adjusted, you can follow these instructions on How to Adjust Square Alignment.
Do I have to press down on the cutting head in order to cut?
You do not have to press down on the cutting head to cut your material. Just place your material under the guide and slide the cutting head in either direction. The automatic paper clamp will hold your work in place and ensure accurate results.
